Charlotte is the largest city in North Carolina and the eighteenth largest city in the United States. Charlotte is the seat of Mecklenburg County. In 2009, the Charlotte metropolitan area had a population of 1,745,524.
The city is nicknamed the Queen City, because both city and county are named in honor of the German Princess Charlotte of Mecklenburg, who had married England’s King George III a year before Charlotte was founded.
Charlotte is located between the Appalachian Mountains and the Atlantic Ocean. The city is the second largest banking center in the country after New York. The country’s largest bank, Bank of America, has its corporate headquarters in Charlotte.
Charlotte has become known as “The New Energy Capital” because there are more than 180 companies involved in the energy sector in the city. Charlotte is also known as the City of Churches and is the birthplace of famous evangelist Reverend Billy Graham. The city continues to experience rapid growth, which has contributed to the rise in drug trafficking in the state.
North Carolina has had a marked increase in drug trafficking in the past decade. North Carolina has a large rural area, as well as a large migrant population and mountainous areas, all of which contribute to the trafficking increase. Heroin, cocaine, methamphetamine and marijuana are all available in North Carolina. As a result, law enforcement is working hard to control the drug trafficking and addiction problems.
Cocaine is shipped from northeastern North Carolina into Pennsylvania and Virginia. Despite this, cocaine addiction has stayed static for the past ten years in North Carolina. In the past twenty years, heroin use has decreased, though use of the drug is still popular in the cities.
The use of methamphetamine continues to grow in North Carolina, which has contributed to a disturbing increase in crime. Marijuana is a drug readily available throughout North Carolina. As in every state in the United States, prescription drug addiction is growing at an alarming rate, creating criminal, social and economic problems.
